Happy birthday, Tomie dePaola!

It's Tomie dePaola's 75th birthday today, and I'm celebrating it by ordering a copy of the just-released Strega Nona's Harvest (Putnam Juvenile).  I wish I were celebrating it by visiting the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art's retrospective of his career, Drawings from the Heart, but that's in Northampton.  Someday!  In the meantime, I'll have to host my own in-house retrospective.

Do you have a favorite Tomie dePaola book?  Please share!

I love listening to de Paola read his autobiographical series (Fairfield Ave) on the LIstening Library recording. =)

We love him too! Pancakes for Breakfast and The Art Lesson are two we love! Thank you for the idea to celebrate with his books today!

We saw the Tomie dePaola exhibit at the Eric Carle Museum when we visited my sister this summer. Lovely place.

Mamalibrarian, I'll definitely check out the audio of the Fairfield Avenue books. I love that dePaola reads them himself.

And Patricia, thank you for reminding me of Pancakes for Breakfast and The Art Lesson--we tend to read dePaola's folktale retellings and holiday books, so those two will round out the selection.

Kate, you just make me jealous.

The Clown of God is my favorite, hands down. The story breaks me every time, and the illustrations are perfect.
